THE PLANETS
There are currently ten planets in use including the Sun and Moon. I personally use eleven planets
because I include the Earth. Planets represent consciousness or what I would refer to as
awareness and desire. There is also an important point called the Ascendant which functions like
a planet. Following is a description of each planet.
THE SUN is who or what you believe you are (self-image). The Sun desires an identity based upon
its natal house. The Sun seeks to express this identity by means of its sign.
THE ASCENDANT is how you believe others respond to you. You express yourself through your Sun
and the Ascendant provides the feedback.
THE MOON is the emotions you feel in response to the Ascendant. The Moon determines how you
choose to react to these emotions. The Moon is like a thermostat that controls the heat of your Sun
(see Cycle of Self-expression).
The Cycle of Self-expression:
The Sun, Ascendant and Moon are the most important points in your chart. They form a cycle of
expression that determines how you interact with the outer world. You express yourself (Sun) and
watch how others respond (Ascendant). Their response will trigger emotions (Moon) and you will
modify your self-expression in response to those emotions.
Scenario One: You tell a joke (Sun) and people laugh (Asc). Their response makes you feel good
about yourself (Moon). This leads to greater self-expression (Sun).
Scenario Two: You tell a joke (Sun) but the people don't appear to find it funny (Asc). Some even
appear to be offended. You feel humiliated (Moon) and immediately shut down your self-expression
(Sun).
MERCURY is an awareness of your environment. Mercury represents your ability to interact with your
environment via perceptions and communicative abilities.
Mercury rules Gemini and any house with a cusp within Gemini.
VENUS is an awareness of relationships. Venus applies both to aesthetic and interpersonal
relationships.
Venus rules Libra and any house with a cusp within Libra.
EARTH is an awareness of your ideas or plans taking root on the physical plane. The Earth is the
IC, and Earth activities reach their peak at the Midheaven which is the point opposite the Earth.
The Earth rules Taurus and any house with a cusp within Taurus.
MARS is an awareness of your will and any opposition to your will. Mars has also been referred to
as the fight or flight response.
Mars rules Aries and any house with a cusp within Aries.
JUPITER is an awareness of what the future holds. Jupiter can bring either optimism or pessimism.
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and any house with a cusp within Sagittarius.
SATURN is an awareness of what others expectation from you, especially those who represent
authority figures. Saturn can be your parents, teachers, supervisor at work, even the police.
Saturn rules Capricorn and any house with a cusp within Capricorn.
URANUS is an awareness of your individuality. Uranus is the urge to resist or rebel when the
expectations of others clash with what's important to you.
Uranus rules Aquarius and any house with a cusp within Aquarius.
NEPTUNE is an awareness of your inner voice. Neptune has also been referred to as the collective
consciousness.
Neptune rules Pisces and any house with a cusp within Pisces.
PLUTO is an awareness of psychological wounds that require healing. Once healed, Pluto urges
you to transcend the needs of your ego and offer your service for the betterment of humanity.
Pluto rules Scorpio and any house with a cusp within Scorpio.
NOTE:
Mercury is the traditional ruler of Virgo but the principals of perception and communication as
represented by Mercury really do not fit with the meaning of Virgo. The noted astrologer Robert
Hand states that some people use certain asteroids as the ruler of Virgo. At the present time I do
not assign a ruler for Virgo.
Venus is the traditional ruler of Taurus but again there is little correlation between the meaning of
the planet and the sign. I use the Earth because it is the best fit for the meaning of Taurus.
